My first professionally published book came out in 2001 I think, but it took me about five years to be able to make a living through comics. I still take some commercial work when I can to help pay my bills, so yeah I’m really lucky to have a job that doesn’t really feel like a job!
Since it’s my only source of income, I really don’t have an excuse not to draw- even on days that I don’t feel like drawing, or I’m not happy with how things come out I still have a schedule and deadlines to stick to. Because of that, the way I think about art is a lot different than it was when I first started drawing comics. I still love them, but it’s different.
